  4. Ash and particles in the air seem to make the ozone hole worse

  7. The primary cause of the hole in the Earth's protective ozone
  8. layer is a group of man-made chemicals called
  9. chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), used in refrigerators, air
  10. conditioners and plastic foams. The chlorine released when these
  11. compounds decompose attacks ozone, letting dangerous ultraviolet
  12. light from the sun shine through.

  14.      But a report in Nature suggests that nature can help the
  15. process along. Ozone depletion was expected to be reasonably
  16. mild in 1991; instead, it was severe. That year also saw major
  17. eruptions by Mount Hudson in Chile and Mount Pinatubo in the
  18. Philippines. Volcanoes release enormous amounts of dust. Dust,
  19. along with ice crystals, provides surfaces where
  20. ozone-destruction chemistry works most efficiently.
  21. Unfortunately, while the industrial world is phasing out CFCs
  22. before the turn of the century, other compounds are also ozone
  23. destroyers -- and volcano control is somewhat farther off.
